Frequently asked questions about eSIM Dominican Republic
Does my own SIM card not simply work in the Dominican Republic?
It does, but at steep roaming rates: the Dominican Republic is outside the EU roaming zone and outside most US and Canadian plans. Turn off data roaming on your own SIM and use the eSIM for internet, so there are no surprises on your bill.
What is the best eSIM for the Dominican Republic?
That depends on your usage. Airalo and Holafly only sell unlimited plans there. If you want a fixed plan at a low price, TropiTrade is the budget-friendly choice with 5GB for €14.50 or 10GB for €19.50. Our unlimited plans are cheaper than Airalo and Holafly as well.
How much data do I need for my trip?
For WhatsApp, navigation and email, 3GB to 5GB is enough. If you use social media and upload photos, pick 10GB. For streaming, video calls and hotspot sharing, 20GB or an unlimited plan is the safe choice.
How does the unlimited plan work exactly?
You get 1GB at full speed every 24 hours; after that the speed drops to 1.25 Mbps until the next day starts. WhatsApp, navigation and email keep working fine at that speed, video streaming slows down. The clock starts at first use.
Will the eSIM work at my all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana?
Yes. The tourist areas around Punta Cana and Bávaro have good Altice coverage. That helps, because resort WiFi is often slow and shared. With hotspot sharing your travel companions can use your plan too.
Can I make calls with this eSIM?
The plans are data-only, without a phone number or calling minutes. Calling over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Teams works fine on the data. Your own number stays reachable next to the eSIM; note that regular calls on your own SIM will incur roaming charges.
When do I install and activate the eSIM?
Install the eSIM at home on WiFi, it takes about five minutes. The validity only starts at the first connection to the network in the Dominican Republic, so installing before departure does not cost you any days.
Is this a prepaid SIM card?
Yes. You pay a fixed amount upfront, with no subscription and no charges afterwards. If your data runs out, you order a new plan in a few minutes.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Most iPhones from the XS onwards and recent Samsung and Google devices support eSIM. Your phone needs to be carrier-unlocked. See the full guide and compatibility list
Which network will I be on?
Altice, one of the largest providers in the Dominican Republic, with 4G and 5G where available. The same network Airalo and Holafly use, you simply pay less.
