Cheapest eSIM for the Netherlands: our advice

Looking for an eSIM for the Netherlands? Airalo and Holafly only sell unlimited plans. At TropiTrade you can pick a fixed data plan from €4.50, and unlimited is cheaper with us too: 7 days unlimited costs €16.95 (Airalo: €24.50, Holafly: €25.50). Our eSIMs run on both KPN and Vodafone, each with 5G. You receive the QR code by email right away and our support team is happy to help, including on WhatsApp.

Do you need an eSIM in the Netherlands?

If you live in the EU you roam for free in the Netherlands, so you do not need an eSIM. Visiting from outside the EU is a different story: travelers from the US, UK, Canada or the Caribbean quickly pay steep roaming rates or daily passes. International students and expats also use an eSIM to bridge the first weeks until their Dutch subscription is sorted. Install it at home on WiFi and you are online the moment you land at Schiphol.

Network coverage in the Netherlands: KPN and Vodafone with 5G

Our Netherlands eSIMs connect to KPN and Vodafone, two of the three nationwide networks, each with 4G and 5G. Airalo uses a single network there, we use two. The Netherlands has some of the best mobile coverage in Europe: you are connected in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht down to the smallest villages, and the eSIM connects the moment you arrive at Schiphol or Eindhoven Airport. Your phone needs to be unlocked and eSIM-compatible; most iPhones (XS and newer) and recent Samsung and Google devices support eSIM.

Frequently asked questions about eSIM Netherlands

I am from an EU country, do I need an eSIM?

No. Within the EU you roam for free on your own plan, so as a visitor from Belgium, Germany or any other EU country you do not need our eSIM. This eSIM is meant for visitors from outside the EU, such as the US, UK, Canada, Suriname or the Caribbean.

What is the best eSIM for the Netherlands?

That depends on your usage. Airalo and Holafly only sell unlimited plans. If you want a fixed plan at a low price, TropiTrade is the budget-friendly choice with 5GB for €12.00 or 10GB for €18.00. Our unlimited plans are cheaper as well, and you get two networks instead of one.

How much data do I need?

For WhatsApp, navigation and email, 3GB to 5GB is enough. If you use social media and video call home, pick 10GB. Staying for weeks without watching your usage, go for unlimited or 50GB.

How does the unlimited plan work exactly?

You get 1GB at full speed every 24 hours; after that the speed drops to 1.25 Mbps until the next day starts. WhatsApp, navigation and email keep working fine at that speed, video streaming slows down. The clock starts at first use.

I am moving to the Netherlands to study or work, what should I get?

Take an unlimited plan of 15 or 30 days, or the 50GB plan. That bridges the first weeks until your Dutch subscription or bank account is sorted. When the plan runs out, you simply order again.

Can I make calls with this eSIM?

The plans are data-only, without a Dutch phone number or calling minutes. Calling over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Teams works fine on the data. Your own number stays reachable next to the eSIM; note that regular calls on your own SIM will incur roaming charges.

When do I install and activate the eSIM?

Install the eSIM at home on WiFi, it takes about five minutes. The validity only starts at the first connection to a Dutch network, so installing before departure does not cost you any days.

Is this a prepaid SIM card?

Yes. You pay a fixed amount upfront, with no subscription, no registration and no charges afterwards. If your data runs out, you order a new plan in a few minutes.

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Most iPhones from the XS onwards and recent Samsung and Google devices support eSIM. Your phone needs to be carrier-unlocked. See the full guide and compatibility list

Which network will I be on?

KPN or Vodafone, two of the three nationwide Dutch networks, each with 4G and 5G. Your phone automatically picks the strongest signal.
